We have been selected as one of 500 nonprofit finalists in Toyota’s 100 Cars for Good program, a major philanthropic initiative in which the automaker is giving 100 cars to 100 non-profits over the course of 100 days. Habitat for Humanity – MetroWest/Greater Worcester was selected as finalist from more than 4,000 applications nationwide.

Each day, beginning May 14, 2012, 100 Cars for Good will profile five finalists at www.100carsforgood.com. Individual members of the public will be able to vote for which ever nonprofit they think can do the most good with a new vehicle. The nonprofit with the most votes at the end of each day will win one of six Toyota models. Runners-up will each receive a $1,000 cash grant from Toyota.

Habitat for Humanity – MetroWest/Greater Worcester will be up for consideration on Monday, June 11th.

How would we use the new vehicle if we’re lucky enough to be selected:

The vehicle is intended to be a tool to help us further our mission of providing safe, affordable housing to those in need. Our affiliate spans 29 towns in the MetroWest- Greater Worcester area of MA. That’s approximately 740 square miles! We work to actively engage each community, whether it is through active construction, the repair of a Veteran’s home or the site of our latest fundraiser. This engagement requires a lot of travel. We’re out almost every day meeting with members of the community, working volunteer fairs at one of the many local colleges, transporting construction materials, creating new partnerships with local businesses or meeting with our partner families. Right now staff uses their own vehicles, which both complicates and adds expense, because of mileage reimbursement costs.

This summer we will be building 5 homes in 3 different communities- requiring even more travel! Because of the large service area coupled with the cost of gas, our affiliate would benefit tremendously from a Toyota Prius. The Prius will allow us to cut our operating costs and redistribute this money to completing more homes for families in need of safe, affordable housing & critical home repair projects for our Veterans.

HFH-MW/GW asks Wayland residents to vote YES. Article 22 in the upcoming Wayland Town Meeting asks the town to appropriate Community Preservation Act (CPA) funds for the Habitat for Humanity project that will be built on Stonebridge Road.

At the 2010 annual Town Meeting, the town approved the transfer of 3.03 acres of land for the construction of four units of affordable housing. That vote set in motion a process that included asking for construction bids, awarding the contract to Habitat for Humanity MetroWest/Greater Worcester, the formation of committees, and the beginning of outreach and fundraising.

The budget for the construction of the two duplexes is over $700,000. Click to read more.

The ReStore helps to fund HFH-MW/GW’s projects through a new business model that might be of huge interest to the average homeowner on a budget. The retail store at 11 Distributor Road, helps to make the projects come to life, and customers — and donors — are finding that the store is on their list of favorites. It is just one of the efforts that has helped Habitat for Humanity to find new ways of supporting its mission. Read more here.

Habitat for Humanity believes strongly in community building. We depend on the involvement of the community in order to make affordable housing a reality for families in need. Our affiliate has been fortunate to have many committed supporters. One example is O’Neil Brothers Concrete Contractor. Sean O’Neil and his family business have donated labor by laying down the concrete slab floors for all of our homes over the past 18 years. They did this all without once asking for recognition. Well, we at Habitat believe that such dedication should not go unnoticed. On behalf of us and all of the families whose lives you have changed for the better, thank you.
